Review of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) by Eric D — 01 Sep 2009
I'm tempted to say that they don't make adventure movies like this anymore, as it has moments that make it feel like a great adventure flick. Overall, it's entertaining though a bit mindless. (Sort of one of the reasons we turn to Action/Adventure flicks in the first place, isn't it?).
Having read the classic stories ("King Solomon's Mines," "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," "Dracula," "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes," "The Invisible Man," "The Picture of Dorian Gray," and "Tom Sawyer") that the characters come from will both help and hinder the enjoyment of the film (on the one hand, you'll recognise their names instantly and the lore associated with them, on the other it's impossible to believe that they all would have existed within the same time period... but then it's all for fun, right?).
I've yet to read the graphic novel, which is probably a good thing since Alan Moore's works seem to get utterly raped when adapted for the silver screen.
A good watch for those days when you want to get away from it all.
