Review of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) by Mark P — 16 May 2011
It's slightly campy, more than little clichà (C)d and it hasn't aged that well - or at least the special effects haven't. But it's still an entertaining movie. The characters are of course pure classic, the story is not horrible and some of the scenes really look rather nice.
The problem is that most of the actors are not that convincing, though Sean Connery is as great as always. Though he kind of steals the show. Whether or not that is a good thing is up to the viewer. For me it saved the film as it would have otherwise been utterly stupid and boring.
Let's see, what else... Oh, the addition of Tom Sawyer (Shane West) was pointless. Hated that one. Vampire-Mina (Peta Wilson) was actually slightly cool, though I'm not sure whether or not she would have been better as a normal human being like in the comics.
So my final point is that this is not a bad film and it is entertaining if you like fantasy films in general, but it's not a very good one either.
