Review of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) by Frank S — 26 May 2015
I thought that the movie was a blast, and the generally negative reviews of thje film are both infuriating and mysterious. From the beginning of the film in Africa there is dynamic action and heroism that does not seem hackneyed or vapid.
True ,it is not Alan Moore's book and I respect that he did not like it. The characters of the League played out very well for me. Sean Connery in his last action role was a commanding if reluctant leader and hero. I thought Peta Wilson as Mina Murray, and also particularly liked Tom Sawyer (Shane West) and Captain Nemo ( Nasserudin Shah). Professor Moriarty as arch- Villain was a little over the top, but compared to other heroic epics, the movie was smart, well- written, and also a literary action movie. I would compare it to Schwarzeneggars' "Last Action Hero" which in my book was also a great and witty film that was very much underrated in my book. I have seen it about 5 times and enjoy seeing every year or two. This was a wonderful film and many of the comments reflect it. Many of the professional reviewers did not like it, but I do not understand their taste as well.
