Review of The Last Word (2017) by Scott R — 26 Mar 2017
Old, rich, grumpy, control-freak, wants to read her own obituary before she passes so she hires a writer.
Could most scriptwriters turn that one sentence into a role expressly composed for Shirley MacLaine? Yup. It almost writes itself. Theatergoers know what they're getting before buying a ticket.
The hard part is creating interesting surprises. I think they succeeded. Better still, in a variation of "breaking the 4th wall" your writers, writing about writing, tell us the dramatic devices they're about to use, then use them.
The young black girl seen in the trailers is a stone hoot in the R2D2 role as well.
Worth renting. Worth a ticket if you want to encourage more of this sort of movie.
