Review of The Last Witch Hunter (2015) by Stephanie R — 22 Oct 2015
The Last Witch Hunter is a supernatural action film filled with a fun premise on modern day witches. It does have its clinks of having a decent plot and at times can be a little tiresome with the formulaic story. Vin Diesel sure tried to create another film that is trying to be a franchise of its own that is away from his Fast movies and Riddick. His collaboration with the screenwriters on how the movie came to be from the inspiration of his Dungeons and Dragons character. The screenwriters did created a modern world and the varieties of witches that are living amongst the humans. It is a fun idea to play with and show, especially as they tried to explain some of the spells and the witches own special power from Dreamwalkers, stones that causes storms, ect. It can be overwhelming with a variety of characters being shown, or ideas but they at least give some explanation as Vin Dieselâ(TM)s character informs his new partner of a priest (Elijah Wood).
Kaulder (Vin Diesel) is an immortal witch hunter who is hunting witches that break the treaty of harming humans or playing with dark magic. Until a witch queen from his past soon arrives in New York City to destroy humans by a black plague. Kaulder is going to need help from a witch that is a dreamwalker Chloe (Rose Leslie) to help stop the queen.
The Last Witch Hunter does have fun talented casts like Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood, and Michael Caine. The visual effects were okay, the action sequences were short and in a dark lighting set from taking place at night or in caves underneath the church. The opening scene of Kaulder encountering the witch queen also had a somewhat confusing fight sequence with close ups and quick editing shots that just made it dull.
The film does suffer from a repetitive formula with the plot, seeing Kaulder going to one place to another, visiting other witches under disguise or people who practice black magic to investigate clues on the witch queen. That is the story throughout the movie; it does introduce characters that may not be developed or adding more to the world building of modern day witches. The plot can be a bit boring at times, and slow moving until things pick up when the witch queen is in the picture and they have to race against time to stop her.
The Last Witch Hunter is a fair film with some action and visual effects but just falls with a slow, boring plot concept.
