Review of The Last Witch Hunter (2015) by Darren C — 24 Oct 2015
If you attend a showing of this film with the overblown expectation of high art, then not only will you be severely disappointed, but you should also question your reason for purchasing a ticket.
The Last Witch Hunter is a typical popcorn muncher that utilizes a charismatic action star, and a talented supporting cast. To what end they are utilized is in the eye (and likely predisposition) of the viewer. Where the movie suffers, is in the shortness of its run-time. There is not sufficient time to flesh out the primary characters, much less the supporting cast. That being the case, it is difficult to have any affinity for them - and easy to write them off in any number of ways. With Diesel in the lead, moviegoers expecting action and muscle will not be disappointed. Michael Cain provides a level-headed element, though his screen time is disappointingly short.
Ultimately, you will probably take from this movie what you expected to. If you expected a popcorn munching, explosion laden, action/fantasy flick, you will leave feeling satisfied. If you wanted the depth and breadth of Lord of the Rings compressed into an hour and a half, you were asking to be disappointed before the opening credits began.
