Review of The Last Winter (2006) by Banu A — 03 Jun 2008
I could see what this film was attempting to accomplish, but it doesn't really pull it off. The idea of a horror picture infused with environmental issues is interesting, but even with a good concept the film manages to get very distracted with some pretentious and ridiculous moments.
I didn't find a single moment of this film to be scary and the shoddy CGI caribou monster didn't help either. What the hell was that thing? An angry spirit unearthed by global warming and Ron Perlman's excessive yelling and cussing in this movie? That's another thing.
..I usually love Perlman, but his routine gets annoying here. As for the rest of the cast...they sucked! James LeGros couldn't act in this movie at all, he was too busy muttering lines at inaudible volumes.
I didn't buy the fact that the crew was becoming disoriented or insane, they just couldn't pull it off acting-wise. And the last scene...give me a break! I'm supposed to believe that the plot was developed enough to justify that kind of an ending? That just insults me! I'll give the flick 2 stars for the great cinematography, practically the only good thing about the movie.
..Unfocused, laughable, and often boring, The Last Winter fails as a horror picture with ecological issues.
