Review of The Last Winter (2006) by Adam D — 13 Apr 2009
Much to my disappointment "The Last Winter" serves as much of an environmental statement attempt and very very little as a horror movie. It starts off fine, moving at a slow-boil pace and preferring to work the psychological angle rather then the literal.
You really think that it's going somewhere, but no. It's like at one point the film makers said, "Fuck it" and decided to throw in some crappy CGI monster things and allow everything built up to that point to just fizzle out.
Nothing is explained. No questions are answered. And in the end you are only vaguely aware of what has happened to the world. It seems that the consequences of our actions will always be just slightly out of frame.
Though the movie constantly reminds you that global warming is in fact bad, it never makes any valid points nor does the message come across with sufficient power. It all just feels like an exorcise in trying to care.
Oh. And it's never ever scary.
