Review of The Last Winter (2006) by Daniel K — 21 Dec 2009
2: Interesting independent genre piece, but it fell short of my expectations. I've seen more than one film with a similar storyline that blows this one out of the water (The Thing is one such example).
Many of the characters were a bit thin here. I didn't get enough of a sense of what precisely all these people were doing out here either. Additionally, the story didn't seem to have any resolution and left far too many loose ends.
I kept expecting the abandoned oil well to feature prominently in the story at some point, or for its significance to be explained. There was never any sense of dread; the director failed to instill a sense of fear within me.
The story should kept me on the edge of my seat, but instead I just waited for the inevitable to occur. The most interesting aspect of the film for me was its being set up in ANWR. This was of particular interest for me simply because I'd been to some of the towns mentioned in the story this past summer and driven practically up to where the film is set from Anchorage.
The environmental message was original, but uninspiring for me. I don't feel like one needs to invent vengeful spirits to make it scary or to get the environmental point across.
