Review of The Last Waltz (1978) by Scott K — 16 Mar 2008
The rating is based on a completely biased opinion, as I consider myself an enormous admirer of these guys. The delivery and overall aesthetic of the movie, however, is what can easily grab the average listener.
Above and beyond the seemingly flawless, (and mildly overdubbed), performance, lies a very true account of what eventually morphed into Robbie Robertson's control over their artistic merit. Many lovers of the Band will always look at this document on film as very bitter-sweet, knowing now that this was indeed the end.
.. a fact unknown to four-fifths of the group at the time. This was more Robbie's swan song than anything, but what can't be denied are the sheer chills that roam through my nervous system everytime I see Camera 1 panning from stage left to right through "Up On Cripple Creek".
God bless you Richard and Rick, wherever you are.
