Review of The Last Waltz (1978) by Thomas M — 17 Feb 2010
Great definitive performances by all involved in what turned out to NOT BE the Bands final concert. Dr. John has the absolute high water mark of the film with his frothy whimsical take on his own song "Such a Night".
But Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Muddy Waters all have great moments in the sun here. Joni Mitchill is a little to goofy to be taken seriously. Despite having written the everlasting classic "Big Yellow Taxi".
If all Martin Scorsese did was direct concert films and music videos (He did the Michael Jackson music video for "Bad") he'd have a fine career right there. But thankfully he is a well rounded and extremely gifted director of all things.
The jack of all trades for film directors.
