Review of The Last Waltz (1978) by James C — 11 Oct 2007
Arguably the greatest classic rock movie in the history of rock movies. The Band, more popularly known as Bob Dylan's backing band, were a phenomenal group of musicians and songwriters in their own right, and this is their farewell concert. What do you get when you have internationally acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese direct your concert movie? You get The Last Waltz.
One of the highlights: drummer Levon Helm singing lead to The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down -- an account of the American civil war but told, interestingly, from the point of view of the losing Confederate side. One of the great rock voices of all time (as Norah Jones has correctly pointed out). File this one near the top of your 'Music That Matters' list.
