Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Melody S — 20 Mar 2008
I saw this last when I was probably 16 or something so I personally didn't really have a hope of getting as much out of it as I did this time. I'm not remotely religious beyond believing in a higher power of some kind, but I believed Willem Dafoe's Jesus here to an almost frightening degree.
For a late Eighties production it looks *astoundingly* sumptuous, and perhaps most amazingly of all never quite feels like "a bunch of Americans doing the crucifixion story". Now that it's inside me I've a strong feeling this movie will haunt me till I meet my maker.
It's absolutely beautiful.
