Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Clint E — 24 Mar 2008
For a long time this was my all time favourite movie. Growing up in a secular household I never really understood why the story of Jesus was powerful until I saw this. The last half hour is one of the greatest pieces of cinema I have ever seen, with its twilight zone ending.
It heightens the humanity of the story when you understand what it is he had to give up. It is surprising to me, given the controversy the film created in the eighties, that it has now become a film that is accepted by Christians because of the human focus of the story.
The Peter Gabriel soundtrack ages it a bit, but it's still powerful.
