Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Phil S — 09 Apr 2008
Despite me being a professional atheist, I have always enjoyed the more interesting bible stories. The tale of Christ is up there with the Book of Revelation in terms of damn good storytelling. View it as fiction and you can't go far wrong.
Anyway, Scorsese's take on the worlds most famous Rags to Riches tale is probably the definitive. The reason for this I think is because he DOES treat the source material as though adapting a novel (which, of course, he was...Nikos Kazantzakis' to be precise). The film blends famous scenes from the New Testament with interesting 'What If's, building to a climax both scary and stunning. The casting may be a bit weird on the whole (Keitel as Judas? David Bowie as Pilate?!) but that all serves to outline what an experimental film it truly is.
