Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by Amelia G — 23 Apr 2008
Fascinating. Its imperfect, of course. I think it suffers from being dated (it seems to scream "80's!" at times). And some of it is pretty odd; it certainly stretches the limits. And I'm not just talking about its "controversial" subject-matter or its portrayal of John the Baptist (he always was the weird guy standing in the dessert yelling "The end is near!") or Judas, which was perhaps my favorite aspect of this film.
It takes you in a lot of strange places, which you're not always prepared for and which can be slightly overbearing. However, for all of its flaws, it is an exceptionally interesting and well-made movie.
Its certainly refreshing, unlike any Jesus movie I've ever seen, and it seems to me like the most realistic, both in the way it depicts Jesus himself and even in its portrayal of the region and the times.
(Who knows? Maybe Pontius Pilot really WAS David Bowie. :-P) An incredibly remarkable film. It forces you to think.
