Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by J S — 25 Apr 2008
This was a great film with enormous flaws. This movie was based on the premise of Jesus couldn't have a "normal life," i.e. a life with a wife and children. Unfortunately, we're never given a reason for this.
The latent feminist in me screams "What? You think us women aren't capable of traveling?!?" There's this religious/catholic/mystic idea of "That's just how it is," that I cannot accept.
It instead just made Jesus sound even crazier than he probably was meant to. My rating also lost a second star because of one simple fact: Jesus is white in this movie. I don't CARE how frickin' terrific an acter Willem Dafoe is - he's white.
Very, very white. Oh how I had to suspend my views of the natural world while watching this thing, while my (non)religious views weren't bothered at all. Very odd. Still, it was a good movie, even though it dragged a little towards the end.
Plenty of weirdness, which is always to my taste, but with a realistic aspect to it all. And, well, David Bowie was in it.
