Review of The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) by William W — 22 Jun 2008
Scorsese's '80s work often gets short shrift, but this is probably his best film (besides After Hours, it's certainly my favourite). It's not perfect, but it's as pure an expression of faith (real, ragged, questioning faith) as any I've ever seen.
Dafoe makes a perfect (if unexpected) Jesus; Gabriel's score mixes his own interests and Middle Eastern influences masterfully. I really can't recommend this film enough, but with one warning: have patience, as even though the film is long (and not as tight as it could be in certain places), it's well worth sitting through all the way.
