Review of The Last Station (2009) by Ben F — 14 Feb 2010
A charmingly twitchy James McAvoy plays private secretary to Tolstoy in this spryly entertaining and philosophical frolic. As he encounters Tolstoy's adoring disciples and frenzied wife, McAvoy comes to understand the difference between the principles of Tolstoy's movement and what the author truly believes is right.
For an example, his assertion that the physical body doesn't exist might have seemed logical on paper, but how can he deny the joy of physical contact while in bed with his loving Sofya? Ultimately, the movie is an arguement in favor of embracing romantic relationships, taking an active interest in others, and refusing to define your life by any single doctrine.
