Review of The Last Station (2009) by Andy J — 25 Feb 2010
Stagy. I had a hard time buying into any of the drama that plays out on screen here. Yes, there is some fun to be had seeing masters like Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer sink their teeth into some showy material playing historical giants.
But everyone seems to be overplaying their hand constantly...and there are plenty of big speeches to overplay. The movie also struggles to define whose story it really wants to tell...James McAvoy's character? Plummer's Tolstoy? Mirren's Countess?
