Review of The Last Station (2009) by Stefan G — 16 Mar 2010
I'm not really sure about the accuracy of anything depicted in this movie. Anyone looking for a historical context or discussion need to look elsewhere.
This could easily have been a "Masterpiece Theatre" mini-series, but there's Christopher Plummer to at least take this movie somewhat out of a soap-opera trapping. He is his usual sophisticated, distinguished self, but is his characterization really Leo Tolstoy, or a Stratford hybrid? Helen Mirren is very committed as Sophia, but her hysterics get to become borderline farcical. James McAvoy's experiences are an attempt to establish parallels, but comes off as half-baked.
