Review of The Last Station (2009) by Ryan S — 20 Jun 2010
(Oscar watch) Never knowing how to successfully straddle the melodrama-drama-comedy line, The Last Station gets caught up in character gimmicks which impact the historical reverence of the film. Similar to my sentiments on Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria, I am unsure whether to fault Michael Hoffman's direction, or Helen Mirren's self-induced portrayal in depicting Sofya as a peacocky, frivilous, emotionally teeter-tottering over-the-top drama queen.
Yes - she was nominated for Best Actress. How? God knows why. Usally better than this, Mirren and her character were the most inconsistent downfalls of The Last Station. Luckily Christopher Plummer comes through with a lively, whimiscal take on Tolstoy ("Cock-a-doodle-doo"), along with an attractively engaging performance by the loveable James McAvoy.
These two truly make The Last Station tolerable.
