Review of The Last Station (2009) by Mark F — 29 Jun 2010
I really don't like what they did with McAvoy's character. They set up this puritanical to worldly character development arc for him that seemed rather obvious and forced. They added in all of these personality quirks too that just didn't work for me..perhaps if he were 10 years younger.
The other over-engineered, over-acted character is the Countess, played by Mirren. Her actions and reactions just didn't seem natural...unless she were playing a manic.
This film is so self-aware that it's a film about Tolstoy. The screenplay, directing, and acting all seemed like rush jobs.
