Review of The Last Station (2009) by Francis M — 11 Aug 2010
Mirren and Plummer make the other actors in this film seem like amateurs in a school play and that's saying something with the likes of Paul Giamatti and James McAvoy in the cast. She and he are pitch perfect bringing to life Sopya and Leo Tolstoy with depth and character.
Ususally these types of historical biopics get lost in their surroundings, but not this one. Mirren sucks you in and the twinkel in the eye of Plummer comes through with pure chemistry and vivid detail.
It truely brings across Tolstoy's inner struggle with his utopian ideas and his own flawed human shell, while at the same time protrays a strong idealist woman who stood not behind but beside a brilliant mind.
