Review of The Last Starfighter (1984) by Daniel K — 20 Feb 2008
This is definitely a tongue in cheek good ole fashioned romp of a film. It is ridiculous and silly, but one can't help but enjoy it. It is so modest and pure of heart that one can't help but an have an endearing feeling towards it.
The effects are very amusing, but their rudimentary nature actually gives the film some of its charm. It has just about every cliche one can think of and follows a tried and true formula, but in this case one can't imagine it any other way.
It fits like a glove. It feels just like an old-fashioned serial/adventure/romance story of the type that is never made anymore (Sky Captain is the only recent example that comes to mind). I'm curious to see how this ages on me.
I suspect it may even be better the second time. It seems like the kind of film that one could become very comfortable with. It's the antithesis of difficult filmaking and could be quite reassuring to come back to every once in a while.
