Sure its a star wars rip-off, but its better than Tron and influenced movies like Star Kid and Galaxy Quest (and even some scenes from Back to the Future and terminator 2) as well as all modern movies that use CGI since this was on of the first movies to use CGI for all special effects other than make-up and explosions.
The graphics look dated now, but were ahead of their time. Good musical score also.
