Review of The Last Starfighter (1984) by Tim F — 07 Feb 2011
I've never heard of this one but it gave me somewhat the same feeling as E.T. even! It's filled with classic 80's music and theatrical pieces which assist to the typical 'young hero story'.
Also the acting suits the 80's, spontane and dramatized but they still take it very serious. It's also filled with very inventive stuff, keeping in mind it's from 1984. This is also noticable with the oldskool special effects.
Think of the first 'star wars' but a bit worse. The outer-space scenes are very low texture, it might even be deliberatly sketchy, it is unknown territory. What I also found very 80's is the usage of so much make-up, Lance is like a doll at some points.
Also the mask of the optimistic lizzard is very nice, sadly you see often that it is a mask. I very much liked the approach of entering a new dimension through a game, like Tron. Also the 'double' is sure in for some awkward experiences.
It was mostly like I expected, a very special story.
