Review of The Last Starfighter (1984) by Andrew R — 24 Feb 2011
Not enough can be said about this film. While the CG work on it looks dated by today's standards (only due to the technological limits of the day, as films like Tron also prove), for its time, it was ahead of the pack, and in most shots, you don't even notice.
Now that the arguably bad is out of the way, let's focus on the good, and there sure is alot of it.
The last Starfighter is one of those charming and addictive movies that hits every mark it aims for and then some. The dialogue still holds true 20 years down the track, the soundtrack doesn't miss a beat, the performances are timeless and the story is still as inspirational today as the day it was in the cinemas.
This was one of my favorite (if not only favorite) films as a child and 20 years down the track, I'm glad I imported a copy. A thoroughly enjoyable film that doesn't feel the need to get gritty while still telling a story that feels very dark in places and very real throughout the duration.
I cannot say enough about this film, it was brilliant 20 years ago, it's still brilliant today.
Seriously go track down a Region 1 copy on Amazon (it'll set you back about $10 USD)- you wont regret it!
