Review of The Last Starfighter (1984) by Robert K — 10 Aug 2011
I remember going to this movie with some friends back in the day, but it didn't really leave a lasting impression. Seeing it on the big screen again, there was definitely more substance than what I remembered.
The story has a whimsical, fairy tale plot that works despite some inconsistencies. Lace Guest was a perfect Prince Charming, the hero who whisks the girl away in the spaceship to happily ever after. It even had some social commentary (the android double wasn't allowed to fight in the war because he was different-sound familiar?) .
Not the most intense sf the 80's had to offer, but it is a joyful reminiscence of times past. And hey, one of the aliens had what I would call and early I-phone. That was pretty cool.
