Review of The Last Starfighter (1984) by Andrew T — 08 Jan 2010
This film, along with Tron, was one of the first to use computer graphics in film. For the time this film's special effects were amazing. This was also Music Man, Robert Preston, last film as the delightful, interstellar con-man, Centauri.
In a post Star Wars world this film takes a young boy looking to break out of his dull life, and he ends up getting way more than he could ever have dreamed. Lance Guest is a great lead for this film, and Catherine Mary Stewart is charming as the girl-next-door. This film is for any kid who spent hours on a video game and hoped they werenâ??t just wasting time. Sure there are a few cheesy lines, but it was the 1980â??s, and we all did things in the 80â??s weâ??d like to forget.
I would love to see a re-make of this film with todayâ??s technology, and supposedly director Nick Castle and Universal Studios has been working on a sequel titled, Starfighter, to be release this year but I havenâ??t heard any progress on it. In any event, this film shouldn't be taken too serious, but just good olâ?? movie fun.
