Review of The Last Stand (2013) by Adrian Z — 05 Jul 2013
The Last Stand is a modern day Western that marks Arnie's return to headlining action movies. The Last Stand is simple, if not downright simplistic: crafty escaped cartel boss (Noriega) needs to make his escape to Mexico in a souped up car through a small town where Arnie happens to be sheriff, hence the title.
The film skillfully incorporates humour (Knoxville and Guzman are a big help in this department) and delivers on good old-fashioned action (old fashioned enough to count as a throwback to the 80s and 90s).
Arnie's age does not stop him from seeming indestructible, which should be pleasing to fans. Noriega's bad guy, though, is the weakest element of the film, coming across as a poor man's Javier Bardem.
. Although not on par with some of Arnie's very best work, the film is still entertaining enough to make this a welcome return.
