Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by John M — 07 Apr 2012
Ever since I was in middle school, I have been a Tom Cruise fan, mainly due to the "Mission: Impossible" series, especially the first two. I thought that when it came down to it, he could be a great action/espionage star.
Although he has kind of gone off the deep end the past 5 years, the most recent "M:I" movie may have helped his career. But anyways, this review is about "The Last Samurai", a movie I have wanted to see for a long long time.
I finally got the chance the other night and man was I impressed. I didn't really know what to expect going into watching this movie and I think that worked in it's benefit. Cruise does a great job portraying the distraught Civil War veteran who gets captured in combat in Japan when he is hired by the Japanese monarchy to destroy the samurais.
The emotion and acting he did was great, and Cruise has been known at times to put on a great show, this was indeed one of them. The action/warfare was astonishingly entertaining along with all the awesome swordplay (I'm a sucker for swordplay).
Storyline is definitely up there on the interesting scale and I don't know if they could have done it better. The cinematography was also really great, I guess the only thing that is holding me back from giving it higher than 4 stars is the fact that it was a pretty long movie, but most movies are now days.
Awesome movie, and ending. 4/5 JD.
