Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Chris H — 05 Jul 2011
A really well put together film. I hadn't seen this movie in years and it was really nice to revisit it. The movie takes place during Japan's industrial revolution and follows a Captain who comes to train an army for Japan. They run into a rebellion and he is captured. While captured he learns more about the Japanese culture and the way of the Samurai. Realizing what he is fighting for her decides to help the Samurai and fight the government.
Tom Cruise does an excellent job as Nathan Algren a US captain that has some demons he needs to deal with. Ken Watanabe does another excellent job as the wise leader of the rebellion. Both actors feed off each other and make it very believable.
The locations are gorgeous. Cherry blossoms float in the air, forests with sky scraper trees fill the backgrounds...its almost like looking at a picture.
One gripe I had was the very Hollowood-esque ending. The last charge seemed a bit blunt and the last person who survived made me think a bit.
Overall, if you've never seen this film you should definitely go out and check this one out.
