Japan is in turmoil as old values face new technology. The noble samurai are not happy with the state of the nation and rebel. So the emperor calls in Tom Cruise, because he is good at killing injuns. Tom is up for a fight and gets beaten to a pulp by the samurai, earning some respect for his skills along the way. Then we get loads of scenes of Tom learning to love the samurai, dull.

This all leads down to a massive showdown with samurai learning that howitzers and gattling guns are not to be trifled with. it is a fight where you can cheer the valiant samurai lads and their best but futile efforts against bullets and bombs, the whole time moaning that they cannot commit hari kiri. Tom Cruise does not commit hari kiri and goes to thank the emperor for slaughtering all the samurai because that is the warriors way.
