Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Reid S — 31 Jan 2012
The Last Samurai stars Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe who aren't used enough nowadays, because in The Last Samurai they are fantastic.
Acting- Everybody brings their A-game and they are great with choreography. Tom Cruise knows how to star in an action scene, he does his own stunts and kicks lots of ass. He is also a likeable protagonist that you want to see succeed.
Story- The story to The Last Samurai intrigued me very much. An American man being captured by the samurai, and over several months begins to learn their culture, style, techniques, and ways. He eventually realizes that they aren't the enemy, just very dedicated to war. A bit generic, but believable and done with the right amount of drama, and emotion.
Score- The score by Hans Zimmer is absolutely amazing. Hans does a brilliant job with sound, and instrument choices, and smart music writing, to bring the movie to life with the Japanese style of music. It brings the emotion and drama to heart, and the battle scenes to epicness.
Overall- I don't really have any problems with this movie. Sometimes the dialogue can get lost, or disjointed, but is easily overlooked. This is an underrated epic, with genericness, but it's not a thoughtless or emotionless. It was nominated for a few OSCARS for a reason. Great movie 4.5/5.
