Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Peter N — 03 Aug 2012
I would have been a lot more intrigued had the film focused more on actual samurai and Japanese culture. Instead, these elements merely provide a nice backdrop for another Tom Cruise movie. The story is really about him and his journey from ignorantly racist American soldier to a more humble, respectful.
....American soldier. Misplaced focus aside, The Last Samurai remains a captivating adventure tale full of epic battle scenes and memorable moments. The underlying theme of preserving culture and finding balance between ancient traditions and modern industry is interesting, and makes for a well-shot, effective film.
