Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Stefan G — 01 Feb 2013
Given that the star was Tom Cruise, I had rather low expectations. However, I was actually rather impressed by the performance of both Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe, whose quintessentially Japanese sense of honour was quite powerful.
The other characters had their fine moments as well. The story actually encourages the main character's development, though it does seem like a historical fantasy. The presentation is fine for 2003, yet I swear that there's one track that repeats through the movie.
The action is realistic, yet somehow effective. Tom Cruise may be an egomaniac, but this movie certainly is humble.
