Epic portrayal of the traditional-vs-modern struggle of 19th Japan, as the age-old samurai battle their very extinction. Cruise, while solid, seems a tad miscast as an American soldier-for-hire, and the battle sequences lack imagination.
Still, is there really such a thing as a bad samurai flick - especially on this scale? Hardly. Last Samurai is solid Hollywood fare.
