Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Karine S — 15 Oct 2010
My love of Japanese samurai flicks shows in my undying love of this film. I'm on the record as being a big-time Ed Zwick fan, and a fan of Tom Cruise, despite his off camera antics. But really, this film is one of the finest examples of a stranger in a strange land tale I've ever seen.
Cruise is brilliant as a man suffering from the quilt that has haunted him for decades, and Ken Watanabe is beyond masterful as his friend, mentor, and fellow warrior. Add in some gorgeous cinematography and a heart-wrenching score from Hans Zimmer and you have a home run of the movie.
