Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Rotten T — 18 Jun 2011
The Last Samurai always seems play on TV, but I never get a chance to watch it, so I rented it. And boy was I pleased with this film. Great acting by Tom Cruise, and a very beautiful exotic setting in Imperial Japan.
The story is crisp and captivating, and it's a pretty good American take on the samurai genre that we don't see a lot here. The battle scenes were compelling and exciting. The atmosphere of the film is very tranquil and collected and all the actors seem to fit well in their places, especially the role of Ken Watanabe, the wise but fearless samurai ally of Tom Cruise.
The death of Watanabe's character is moving, a very beautiful death indeed. The entire movie is in fact, beautiful, thanks to the highly detailed costumes/set design, the serene Japanese location, and the compelling action scenes and battles.
A very well done movie.
