Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Rainer K — 30 Aug 2011
Strong performances by its too leads Watanabe and Cruise anchor this surprisingly good movie. Well, it's not highly philosophical or sophisticated but it's better than most 21st century flicks of Cruise.
It's mainly about how industrialization and western way of life destroyed traditional culture in Japan (you can take it as a parable if you want...) and depicts a scenery and time (fin de siècle Japan) that's seldom seen in film.
It never leaves the conventions of blockbuster movies and therefore not really surprises with its structure and narration but it has epic battles and interesting setting and characters.
