Review of The Last Samurai (2003) by Christopher E — 16 Jun 2013
I was really moved by this film. The musical score is hauntingly beautiful and I completely enjoyed the story and setting.
Is it historically accurate? No, but it does have an important undercurrent message based upon a true event from what I have read. The tone is a serious one. From a pained hero to a divided country. A clash of cultures. A redemption story for a man and a country.
The acting is good all round. Tom Cruise is on top here and there is no weak link in the rest of the cast. They all emit either chemistry or animosity depending on the scene and the scenes never felt forced for me.
It's always emotionally moving, often somber, very spiritual and a fantastic film. I'm glad I watched it and I'd love to see more like it. If you liked this also check out Pocahontas, dances with wolves, avatar, ect. All doing a similar thing with the theme, so any other recommendations then let me know because I like these films! Also going to try some more historical Japan films too after this influence because I completely dig the era of which it depicts.
