Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Craig G — 23 Sep 2007
Seeing a few of Larry McMurtry's films has left me kind of sour because he plays the same cards every time. Death is built up as a huge plot device for his stories and tries to garner sympathy and emotional response from the audience.
The films slow, but not in that playful Jarmusch way. It also manages to be funny, but the humor quickly disappears and gives way to crushing sense of defeat. Well made, well acted, but a hell of a downer for me.
