Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Sean P — 16 Oct 2007
If you love this film for one reason, make it that there is no musical score. A brave and respectable move that creates a film that doesn't rely on cheap, systematic filmmaking techniques. The scenes that would normally be scored are so much better without it.
In fact, the film takes on a rather menacing edge thanks to the silent eeriness. But there's so much more here; the quality direction for one, some of the establishing shots and general shots of the town are breathtaking and somehow sell the location wonderfully.
What's important about this film is that it shows a lifestyle lived at a time, in a place by people that most will probably never know anything of. What more can you ask from cinema than that?
