Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Giffy G — 28 Dec 2008
This movie had little appeal for me. The characters were empty, hollow, and virtually indistinguishable. I get what the movie was going for: the plight of the small town America, the emptiness that comes with living in a dying town.
I get that, but that doesn't make it interesting movie material. The acting was so subdued that sometimes I wondered if they meant to keep the take that made it into the movie. Moreover, I was confused as to why there were SO MANY undressing scenes.
The movie, to quote Peter Griffin, "Insists upon itself." I seldom like movies that take themselves this seriously, and this movie had few saving graces.
