I think was was Buzz Aldrin from the Apollo 11 moon landing that at first viewing the moon from the surface remarked it was "magnificent desolation", this movie is magnificent desolation to me, sadly beautiful, the not so perfect underbelly of 1950's America, with characters you just cant help becoming engrossed in.
