Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Wellington O — 24 Oct 2012
I think I need a few weeks for this movie to settle with me. The tale is set in the small town of Anarene, Texas, where the people have small-town mentality, and small-town attitudes to life. It's a coming of age movie filled with teenage angst, yet Bogdanovitch seems to capture the equivalent pain in adults going through a mid-life crisis.
Jeff Bridges and Cybill Shepherd show their value and worth at a young age as they play Duane and Jacy respectively, stuck in their on-off relationship. The reason it needs to settle with me is because I accept the classic nature of this movie, yet on first viewing, it seems so bleak, vaccuous and.
..searching for its soul. Perhaps a bit like the town of Anarene itself.
