Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Tw _ — 04 Nov 2011
Beautiful film. I've never been to small town Texas but makes for fascinating characters. The main character here, Sonny, is friends with everyone, but his relationship with each person turns out to be doomed, each in its own way.
Same can be said for his relationship with the wasteland town itself (of which he is now a part owner). What I find most captivating about Sonny though is his mannerism of not speaking, or pausing before speaking when most people would just blab out a response.
Reminds me of Mac from Tender Mercies. My only problem is it seems someone was overly proud of themselves for figuring out Hank Williams music was a perfect fit for this movie (which it is) - less could have been more.
