Review of The Last Picture Show (1971) by Steve S — 21 Nov 2009
**** (out of four).
One of the greatest films of the 1970's and one of my all-time favorites. Everything about it comes together in near perfection to create a classic.
The small Texas town of Anarene is as much a character in this film as the stars. It is the early 1950's and a group of high school students ponder their futures as Graduation grows near.
A Best Picture nominee, it won the Best Supporting Actor Ben Johnson and Supporting Actress, Cloris Leachman, awards. Timothy Bottoms should have been nominated as the central character of Sonny, a quiet young man who is watching his friends move on and the tiny town dying a slow death. Every image is memorable and the film will haunt you well after it is over. A true masterpiece.
