Review of The Last of the Mohicans (1992) by Richard F — 06 Sep 2010
Not a patch on Dances with Wolves which was made the previous year I think. Found the story a little predictable and the characterisation horribly two-dimensional, especially the British officers, the leading lady and even Day-Lewis (who wasn't given any script to work with).
The historical backdrop was fine but the focus was too clearly on the impending birth of an independent America which is a tiresome premise; especially as the suggestion is that this was an independence movement born of frontier frustrations at the dictatorial crown when it was actually an urban, elite guided movement.
Anyway, it was all a bit boring really, though the setting was, of course, stunning and the action was bloody and well-directed.
